Focal Points in the Living Room
Hello and Welcome TrishTalkz Tribe! Have you been looking for a little direction in your design? Today we will discuss making sure your living room has an excellent FOCAL POINT!
As an interior designer, establishing a focal point is a fundamental design principle. A focal point in a room goes a long way in helping the room feel balanced and welcoming. Once you’ve established a focal point, you will have taken the first step in creating an attractive, well-designed space.
Living rooms are typically the part of the home where your family and friends want to come and hang out. So, creating a focal point as soon as you walk into that space will define it and make it feel like a room you want to be in.
Here are tips on creating focal points in your living room.
The Fireplace
The fireplace is one of the most popular focal points in today's living rooms. If your home came with a fireplace, lucky you! The fireplace is a natural focal point. You can make sure it is the dominant feature in the room by enhancing it with things like a great mantel, surrounding it with shelving, or as a part of a larger entertainment unit.
I love a wood-burning fireplace, but if you don't have one, you can always add a gas-burning fireplace, electric or ethanol burning fireplace.
the Furniture
There are several creative ways to use furniture as a focal point. You can use furniture with bold colors to create a focal point. You can use well-known, classic furniture pieces or distinct and/or unusual furniture to create interest and a focal point. With the style of furniture available today, your furniture options are unlimited.
the Light Fixtures
Light fixtures draw your eye up and can create a great focal point. Some of the light fixtures today are designed to be a piece of artwork and a source of light. Sometimes the sheer scale of the light fixture makes it a focal point. A uniquely shaped light will stand out. Or simply adding a bold color to the mix will make the light fixture a focal point.
the Artwork
Artwork is magical in the way it naturally draws you in. It can be a high-impact focal point! It can be a dramatically sizeable single piece of artwork. It can be smaller framed pieces clustered together like a gallery wall, or it can be an extensive, curated collection that makes you feel like you're in an art gallery.
the Accent Wall
I know some people hate the idea of an accent wall, but it's not going away, and in today's décor, an accent wall can be many things. I will say that they usually make a great focal point in a room. Now the accent wall's color typically makes it a focal point, but sometimes it's the materials and textures of the accent wall. Yes, sometimes accent walls are a great focal point because they're functional too!
The View
Now, if you are lucky, the focal point in your room is the view! How do you amplify this focal point? By simply not crowding it with drapery and furniture. If your view offers a decent amount of privacy, ditch the drapery altogether. If sunlight is a problem during the day, add transparent shades to help with that.
Remember to pull your furniture away from the window if possible. If not, ensure the pieces are low and don't obstruct the priceless focal point.
These six spots are excellent lenses for your living room. If you still need to pick one, let your inner designer bring forth that balance and welcoming feeling to your family and guest. Your objective in defining a focal point in your space may just require you to rearrange your furniture using some of the tips shared today. At the end of the day, avoid creating too many focal points in a room. It can and will create confusion!
