If the pandemic has shown us anything, it's that our spaces are in desperate need of touches that uplift and serve us in our day-to-day lives. Whether we recognize it or not, every color has psychological and emotional triggers that we should take heed of in creating a space that serves our families and us. As we spend more time at home than ever, we should invest in making it beautiful!

As spring brings renewal, so does the idea of livening up your interior spaces with pops of color to uplift you. While you should choose colors that speak to you individually, we must admit that we're often subconsciously influenced by what is presented to us by the market.

Here, I introduce interior colors that are trending from five top paint brands that dominate the places we shop. So, before you choose colors simply because of what is being presented to you, get the insider knowledge of what is trending and then consciously and deliberately choose what speaks to you!

First up, Sherwin-Williams

Sherwin-Williams' 2021 Color of the Year is called Urbane Bronze. It is described as a hue from nature that offers warmth and comfort with simple sophistication. After the past year that we've had, this elemental color has the potential to provide rich depth to many spaces in our homes. Whether used as a backdrop, incorporated into our furnishings, or household accessories, the sky is the limit!

In the image above, Urbane Bronze furnishings and accessories are incorporated into this living space with a maple wood floor. The color pairs well with palettes on the warmer end of the color spectrum. So, feel free to add in some warm neutrals and black metal finishes to make the space feel defined and contemporary.

Don't feel the need to go out and buy new furniture to align with color trends!  If you are interested in this color, perhaps you can incorporate the Urbane Bronze over a fireplace or upcycle some pieces as you explore garage sales, consignment shops, or thrift stores to give your spaces a feeling of renewal on a budget.

Next up, Benjamin Moore

Benjamin Moore's color of the year is Aegean Teal. It is a blend of blue, green, and gray. This color is described as intriguing, balanced, and deeply soothing, which I must admit, I agree! It's a part of the color trends 2021 palette, including 11 other paint colors that complement the Aegean Teal. The color allows you to take a moment to reflect and reset as though you are sitting near the ocean. If you have a strong desire for peace in your personal space, look no further.

As with most other on-trend colors this year, Aegean Teal is a color that can be found throughout nature, in our waters, flowers, and wildlife. We know that people are looking for ways to connect with nature more than ever these days, so this color feels right. Aegean Teal can be incorporated throughout your home but has been especially popular in kitchens and bedrooms. It pairs well with white (walls, cabinetry, accents), wood (trim and finishings), and/or gray. Want to get creative? Use an artsy wall hanging or incorporate this color into some fabrics by crafting some unique pillows or re-upholstering a couple of your living room pieces.

Third selection - Behr

BEHR® Color Trends 2021 Palette has introduced a total of 21 new colors for the year! These colors have been uniquely designed and created to elevate our comfort. We're spending most of our time at home, so why not, right? While BEHR has opted to focus on a full palette of beautiful warm colors, the color of the year they have highlighted is Canyon Dusk. It is earthy, warm, and inviting. In total, BEHR's 21 color palette is described as colors that elevate your comfort zone with warm neutrals, restorative blues and greens, and soft, gentle hues.

I think you've caught on by this point; the earth tones this year are everywhere!  Canyon Dusk is presented above as the wall paint color.  I especially like BEHR's maple glaze that reminds me of a terracotta clay pot.  The color can be seen on the wall pictured above. That paired with blues, grays, and warm whites can create a space that offers a welcoming casual vibe.

There is so much versatility in this palette that allows you to introduce the colors as paint, brick, wood, furniture, curtains, or even area rugs!  This palette is ideally suited for someone who wants a blend of casual sophistication and warmth.  But if you like to be bold, throw in a blend of all the colors to your space to offer a colorful, creative, and funky vibe.  This palette is so amazing; they all work together!

Fourth selection, Valspar

Like the previous brand, Valspar also introduced a full palette of colors for 2021. No singular focus on a color of the year here, though. Instead, they offer 12 easy-to-love colors for 2021 that are on-trend to give a feeling of coziness and comfort. Their soft hues introduce nature elements that can work in a country cottage or with elegant traditional décor throughout your interior spaces.

I love that this palette can lend itself to offering the meditative, relaxing oasis we all need so desperately right now.  Am I the only one, or can you easily imagine these colors in a vacation home on the coast, too?!

No exclusions here though, these colors can still be used in contemporary apartment spaces to bring life, relaxation, and a sense of calm. Shades of greens, blues, and warm neutrals throughout the space with the use of paint color, furniture, and artwork are all you need to give your space a reset. Interested in only making some minor adjustments that are budget-friendly?  Swap out your bedding and pillows for a quick reset!

Last but not least, Pantone

I would be remiss not to mention Pantone's 2021 colors of the year! Pantone is a critical leader in the market, influencing many design choices.  Year after year, their choices don't just influence the paint colors we chose for our homes, but also fashion, entertainment, textiles, and multiple other industries.  Trust me, these decisions will ultimately determine what you'll see throughout the marketplace.  So, keep your eye on this one.

This year, they are highlighting a combination of Ultimate Gray and Illuminating.  The latter is a bright yellow that easily sparks joy and energy.  Pantone describes the importance of two independent color elements coming together to support one another to give a greater edge and design emphasis.

According to color psychology, yellow is representative of warmth, joy, and optimism. If you are looking to add some vibrancy and energy to your space, this color blend is the way to go. The combination of these two colors is aesthetically designed to give you a sense of encouragement and hope.

In the image above, the designer has carefully crafted a dining space where you can receive a daily uplift from morning until evening. The yellow placemats, napkin, and floral accessories, and seating give the room a perfect blend of these two colors essential to fuel your harmony and mindset. If you want to add this theme in multiple rooms, think about swapping your table’s vase with yellow candles or other gray and yellow decor!
