Outdated Kitchen Designs

I'm going to ask you eight questions about your kitchen's design.  If you answer yes to one of them, you have a little reno work to do in your kitchen!  Suppose you answer yes to more than one question.  In that case, you must immediately click HERE and schedule a design consultation.

Question #1 - Does your kitchen have Melamine cabinets with wood trim?

If so, the 80s called, and they want their kitchen back.  These cabinets were so popular in the 80s that cabinet makers even offered color options.    Fortunately, this trend did not last long.  If you have these cabinets in your kitchen, they will hurt your property value.  Kitchens sell homes, and buyers will see this kitchen as a complete gut job.

The Fix - Sledgehammer, please, replace all of them right now!

Question #2 – Do you have a hanging pot rack in your kitchen?

They were popular once upon a time because they provided convenient access to your pots and pans and freed up much-needed storage space in the cabinets.  The problem came when pots and pans became a visual eye-sore that hurt your kitchen's design.  Not to mention, inevitably, someone adds something to the rack that doesn't belong.

The Fix - Take the pot rack down, patch and paint the holes, and your home's value will remain intact.

Question #3 – Does your kitchen sink sit on top of the kitchen counter?

These sinks rest on the counter and are usually glued down to the surface using silicone.  They are a low-cost option that doesn't function very well.  Crumbs and dirt usually get trapped around the perimeter.  Worst of all, water gets under the sink's edge and begins to rot the counter underneath.

The Fix – Install an under-mount sink; there are hundreds to choose from.

Question #4 – Do you have mix-matched appliances?

Mismatched appliances in a kitchen stick out like a sore thumb.  A stainless-steel stove, white sink, and black dishwasher are not a good mix.  Ensure all appliances have the same finish to maintain your home's value.   The exception to the rule is wood paneling on the refrigerator and dishwasher that match the cabinetry.

The Fix - Even if you can't afford top-of-the-line appliances, make sure they all have the same finish.

Mix Match Appliances

Question #5 – Did you have tile kitchen countertops?

If your kitchen countertops are made with tile, all anyone can think of is the dirt, grime, and possibly bacteria in the grout.  Most home buyers today see that as a project they must tackle as soon as they move in.  This means they'll try to deduct that cost from the price they're willing to pay for your home.

The Fix – Replace the tile countertops with a solid surface like quartz, and then ask for top dollar for your house!

Question # 6 – Do you have 12x12 tiles on your kitchen floor?

I hate to tell you this, but 12x12 floor tiles look very dated.  Typically made out of porcelain or ceramic, these tiles were the industry staple for decades.  Another eye sore that buyers will consider an eventual project that is costly and time-consuming.

The Fix – Update the look with these 12x20 floor tile or tile flooring that looks like wood.

Question # 7 – Do you have linoleum on your floor in the kitchen?

Linoleum flooring is a resilient floor covering material designed for high-traffic areas.  The sheets of linoleum were popular for decades.  It's still affordable and easy to install and maintain; however, it tends to look like cheap plastic.  It screams DATED!  That will hurt your property value.

The Fix – Believe it or not, get wood flooring.  The way that wood flooring is engineered today, they stand up well in the kitchen.  It is a good investment that will increase your property's value.

Question #8 – Do you have fluorescent lights in your kitchen?

Remember when you hit the switch and you had to wait for the light to power on?  Well, when someone sees this fixture in your kitchen, all of the memories will come flooding back to them, not in a good way.

The Fix – Go with recessed or pendant LED lights.  They last longer and turn right on!
