Outdoor Living Spaces

Have you ever wondered how to decorate your outdoor living spaces?  Of course, you have, and I'm here to help.

Depending on where you live, you may still be enjoying warmer weather.  However, even if you are not, now is a great time to get those discounted prices on outdoor design elements.  Over the last couple of years, outdoor spaces have become vital to our overall happiness.  No matter the season, we're using outdoor spaces for working, dining, entertaining, and plain old relaxing.  Whether your outdoor space is big or small, design it to work for you!   Let's discuss design elements for you to consider.

Outdoor Space #1 – The Balcony

Typically, balconies are a little small.  But they are still a welcomed addition to any apartment.  The first issue that most balcony owners want to address is privacy.  If privacy is a concern, start with a natural privacy screen using plants.   If plants are not your thing, then an artificial plant or bamboo screen may work.

Now, let's talk seating!  For smaller balconies, consider a lovely bistro table and chairs for furniture.   If you prefer to lounge instead, try adding a cushioned bench.  A small hammock, the famous egg chair, or any combination of comfortable seating works well on balconies.

Just remember to use materials that can stand up to the elements.  Top the space off by adding pops of color to shape the area's mood. Add more pillows and cushions to create a comfy feel, and string up some lights to create that warm ambiance.  If your goal for the balcony is for dining or lounging, whatever the case, take a moment to enjoy your little slice of paradise.

Outdoor Space #2 – The Deck

Many people have added decks to their homes in the last two years.  I've had mine for years, but it's time to spruce ours up.  When it's too hot and sunny to enjoy the deck fully, the typical solution is to put up an umbrella.  But if you want to add a little more interest to the space, use sun sail shades.  Their uniqueness protects you from the sun; some are waterproof and fade-resistant.

You gotta have some lounge seating on a deck.  If you go with the popular styles, make sure to add some colorful pillows to the neutral-colored cushions that typically come with them.  I recommend looking at the not-so-common shapes and styles of furniture.  They add automatic style and interest.  Then surround the space with plants, lighting, and side tables to make the area feel welcoming and well thought out.

Outdoor Space #3 – The Patio

The patio is usually the outside space made up of concrete, pavers, stone, or gravel.  This makes it the perfect area for a fire pit.   Fire pits naturally draw the crowd in.  They offer warmth and a comfortable space to sit and gather on a cool night.  Most importantly, they are the best way to roast marshmallows and make smores.  There are plenty of firepit styles out there.  You can have one built in, use a firepit table, or have one that sits on the ground.

To gather at the firepit, choose the Adirondack chair or any comfy seating that's not susceptible to heat or flames.  Whatever you do, enjoy being outdoors under the beautiful night sky.

Another patio favorite is the outdoor kitchen.  The kitchens can be simple or super elaborate.  People are adding pizza ovens, fireplaces, bar seating, grills, refrigerators, and sinks.  The kitchens are often covered by a pergola or a patio cover.  Once the meal is done, everyone moves to the dining table, sitting on an eye-catching area rug beautifully decorated with table settings.  Fill the surrounding space with lighting and greenery, and people will unwind there for hours.

Outdoor Space #4 - The Backyard

The backyard can encompass all that we've talked about today.  You will want to add comfy lounge seating, a dining table and chairs, and a fire pit.  I encourage you to add other exciting elements like a swing, gazebo, or hot tub.

Of course, another essential element to add - is lighting.  String lighting is an easy and economical way to brighten up the space.  It creates a festive party-like atmosphere that helps everyone get in the mood to have a great time.

Since you're already in the backyard, take some time to add lush landscaping.  People are always Wowed by a beautifully landscaped yard.  Make sure the grass is green, add tons of perennials that come back every year, and include those annuals for that burst of color.  Finally, remember to ensure your trees and shrubs are pruned back and healthy.  The backyard is a super valuable space.  Make sure there's something of interest everywhere the eye looks.
